Poker is a game that is widely played all over the world by all sorts of people. It involves dealing with a set of cards and betting certain possessions to whoever wins the game. People started playing it a very long time ago and its popularity has never deteriorated. It can be played in casinos and can be played casually among a group of friends. It is a game that needs mastery and skill and at times a bit of psychology. It is also possible to play it in online.

The winner is normally determined by certain ranks and card combination that determines the leading person in the game. There are various ways that poker can be played depending on the average number of cards used per hand, those shared by everyone in the playing group and those that remain hidden.

Normally a set of cards has a total of fifty two cards available for play. These include aces, kings, queens, jacks and numbers between two and ten. Each of this kind has a version of four suits with them. They include spades, diamonds, clubs and hearts.

There also exist two jokers that are usually used as wild cards. A wild card in poker enables its possessor to use it in whatever form they require for their advantage. It is not mandatory for the wild card to be a joker. Sometimes other cards such as deuces can be called upon to be wild cards depending on the circumstances.

There is a certain order in which the cards are ranked in the game. The highest ranked is the ace. Although it is important to note that at times the ace can act as the lowest depending on the circumstances. As much as it can be used as either high or low, it can never be used as a wraparound. Second from the top is the king, followed by the queen and jack in that order. After which the numbers are ranked in a descending order from ten to two consecutively.

Most poker hands strictly consist of five cards though this may depend on the particular game. In some instances such as the seven card stud, a hand can have seven cards though at the end, the winner is the one with the best five cards. It is definite that hands in the higher category beat those of the lower category. Community card poker which is a very common type of poker consists of incomplete hidden hands and face up cards that are shared.

When it comes to bets, the highest hand wins the pot of course. Betting exercise starts off from the first person and goes on in a clockwise motion. One has three options. They can call, raise or fold their bets. Calling means offering enough to match up what has been offered the last time you bet. Raising involves increasing the amount while folding is basically dropping out of the current hand.

It is important to note that some poker etiquette is required while playing. For example, it is considered rude to initiate a handshake with someone that you have knocked down. They should be the ones to initiate that if they feel like doing so. It is also a bad habit to advantage play by using extra information that you should not have access to so as to win. That is considered cheating.
